Cookies, GDPR and Google Consent Mode v2 on WordPress: practical guide

11 August 2026 2 min di lettura

An effective cookie banner is not just a graphic warning: it must prevent the activation of unnecessary services before choosing, offer acceptance and refusal with equal clarity and allow you to change preferences.

The essential categories

Necessary cookies support security, session and shopping cart. Statistics and marketing, on the other hand, require a choice consistent with the tools installed and with the applicable legislation. Avoid vague categories and describe purpose and duration in understandable language.

Preventive Blocking and Consent Mode v2

Google Consent Mode v2 transmits signals as analytics_storage, ad_storage, ad_user_data e ad_personalization. It does not replace consent: it coordinates the behavior of the tags with the user's choice. The default value should be negated when requested and updated only after interaction.

Technical check

  1. Open the site in private browsing and decline.
  2. Check that Analytics, pixels and script marketing do not write cookies.
  3. Only accept statistics and verify that marketing remains blocked.
  4. Reopen preferences and change your choice.
  5. Repeat the test after theme, cache or tag updates.

Documentation and minimization

Record only the information necessary to demonstrate the preference, define a reasonable duration and do not turn the register into an archive of IP or personal data. Update cookie policy and scanning when services change.

This guide is informative and does not replace legal advice relating to your specific case.
